Nat Wolff was cast as Isaac, the friend that introduces them, and Lauren Dern starred as Hazel's mother. Shailene Woodley starred as Hazel, while Ansel Elgort played Augustus. Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen produced the film. In January 2012, Fox 2000, a division of 20th Century Fox, optioned the rights to adapt the novel into a feature film. Josh Boone signed on to direct a year later, in February 2013. The film stars Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort with Laura Dern, Sam Trammell, Nat Wolff, and Willem Dafoe playing supporting roles.
